Crew Training Courses

Our Training is world class… We STAND by this statement. All our Instructors have worked in the Super Yacht Industry for many years and we therefore provide the most up-to-date and most specialised training in South Africa. Deck Hand Training...

In recent years, Super Yacht Crew members have evolved into highly skilled and professional individuals. In the past, the STCW Basic Qualifications were the entry level prerequisites and crew could build up experience as they went along. Today, crew need to be able to climb on board and add value as productive and professional crew members - from day one.

Practical sections of our Deck Hand Training Course are completed on board various Power Yachts at the V & A Waterfront, Cape Town. This provides the perfect training opportunity for our students.

THE SYT DECK HAND COURSE SYLLABUS FOCUSES ON THE FOLLOWING:
  • Introduction into the Industry (Daywork, Dockwalking, Crew Agents, CV, Crew Housing, Interviews, Visas and Passports)
  • Deck Maintenance Skills (poly-urethane topcoats, filling and fairing, varnishing, teak-oiling, priming, deck acid, wash-downs, etc.)
  • General Deck Hand Duties: Including guest-related duties, anchoring, line handling, tender work and water sports
  • Simulated Fire Safety Drills, Anchoring and Watchkeeping Duties
  • In addition to your Course Completion Certificates, all Deck Crew will receive their first Daywork reference from power yachts where you completed your training
THE OPTIONS WE RECOMMEND FOR ENTRY-LEVEL CREW ARE AS FOLLOWS:

SYSA DECKHAND COURSE - 3 DAYS - R 5 130

This very practical course covers every aspect of being a deckhand on the yachts, including: Yacht maintenance knowledge and application, wash-downs, teak maintenance, deckhand duties (navigational watches and guests on board), tender driving and water sports, line handling and anchoring, to name a few.

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL II - 2 DAYS - R 4 161

Not only do we teach the full RYA syllabus of this internationally accredited license (for power boats under 9 meters), but we also add super yacht skills to make this course applicable for the industry. Our very expensive training equipment simulates pressure even during the training phase, as some of the speed boats and semi-rigid boats on yachts can be in excess of US$ 1 000 000! Our experienced instructors teach students the key aspects, skills and tips of tender driving. During training, we focus on super yacht specific skills expected of crew driving the tender. We also focus on teaching crucial navigational and key safety elements relevant to the super yacht industry.

This course is essential for all crew (Deck Hands, Steward/esses and Chefs) interested in making their CVs attractive and themselves as marketable as possible to find employment on a yacht. Super Yacht guests are regularly ferried between the yachts and the shore, and it is essential to hold a license for this rigid inflatable boat (RIB) before you can drive the yacht's tender.
This two-day course covers all aspects of RIB driving, close quarters handling, planning manoeuvres, man overboard recovery, collision regulations, launching, fuelling, etc. and on successful completion, the students are issued the RYA Power Boat Level II Certificate.

RYA TENDER OPERATOR'S COURSE - 2 DAYS - R 5 586

This new qualification was recently launched at the Monaco Boat Show. This was brought about through a collective effort from the RYA and PYA, as there has been growing calls from within the super yacht industry to step up the skills of entry-level crew with regards to tender driving and safety, especially during night time.

Once you have taken the RYA Powerboat Level II basic qualification, the Tender Operator's Course gives you the opportunity to build on your basic tender driving skills. After two days on a PB Level II course, we are confident that crew have a good understanding of how to operate a tender.  However, adding an additional two days completing the RYA Tender Operator's course will produce an excellent, skilled and confident power boat handler.  Note: You must already hold a RYA PB Level II certificate before you can complete this course.

This course also includes night-time navigation, working with electronic Chart Plotters and twin engine manoeuvres.

RYA PWC (PERSONAL WATERCRAFT/JET SKI) COURSE - 1 DAY - R 2 565

This industry-specific license is essential for Deck crew who often take the yacht owner or his kids on the jet skis. The license is also a prerequisite to the Personal Watercraft Instructor's Course, which will then allow the holder to issue the guests on board with a temporary license to drive the Jet Skis for the duration of their time on board.

Our PW Course is designed for first-time and experienced riders alike. We advise that all crew (exterior and interior) qualify themselves before applying for a job – as this can often be the difference between being hired or not.

RYA PERSONAL WATERCRAFT INSTRUCTOR'S COURSE - 3 DAYS - R 8 550

This qualification is for crew already experienced on Jet Skis in a personal capacity, as well as crew who have already completed a season on super yachts working with the jet skis on a regular basis. You already need to hold a basic RYA PWC qualification to complete this advanced one.

During this course, students are taught how to deliver a fun, safety-conscious and brief course to guests and crew on board. Every commercially operated yacht in the Mediterranean must have a Personal Watercraft Instructor on board, and as a result, this qualification is probably one of the most important industry-specific qualifications new crew can invest in.

STCW BASIC SAFETY TRAINING AND PDSD - 11 DAYS - R 7 900

The STCW is essential and compulsory to work on board any yacht in the industry. The course modules are: Marine Fire Fighting, Sea Survival, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, Proficiency in Security Awareness and Basic Maritime First Aid.

RYA RADAR - 1 DAY - R 1 881

For a green deck crew member, the job on the bridge will normally be limited to position fixing using the GPS, routine safety checks around the vessel and vessel tracking on a secondary radar screen during navigational watches. As with all our courses, the practical training we offer is super yacht-related and industry specific.

RYA VHF - 1 DAY - R 1 881 (EXCLUDING GBP60 CREDIT CARD PAYMENT DIRECTLY TO RYA)

The RYA VHF is an essential qualification building up to becoming an officer on board. This is a very important part of career progression, and the earlier you become comfortable and confident with VHF on-board communications, the better it is for your career.

RYA DIESEL ENGINE COURSE - 1 DAY - R 1 881

The more we are able to multi-task on board, even as an entry-level crew member, the more valuable we become to a vessel. With the RYA Diesel Engine Course, we not only follow the RYA's DEC syllabus, but we have also added a troubleshooting and maintenance programme for Outboard Engines. Students will have a good understanding of how diesel engines operate, impressing the Captain and Crew, as well as leading up to progression courses, such as the 5 day MCA AEC (Approved Engineering Course).

Your choices of the above listed courses are offered at SYSA and can be completed in approximately two weeks to save on accommodation costs. Having completed these courses, as well as having a Training Record Book, you can start working towards your Yacht Rating certificate.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING

For the individuals looking for an opportunity to strengthen their CV through additional qualification, we have joint up with some of our partner schools both in Cape Town, USA and France. Diversity in qualification makes you more valuable to a vessel; being able to offer assistance in more than one department on board.

AEC (MCA APPROVED ENGINEERING COURSE) - 5 DAYS - US$ 850 (NOT OFFERED AT SYSA)

This course, held at ICT in Fort Lauderdale and Bluewater Training in Antibes (the two largest super yacht training providers in the world), is the starting point to becoming an Engineer on a super yacht. However, before moving onto the next level of Engineering qualifications (higher than AEC), crew must first achieve required sea time on board.  If you hold both Deckhand and Engineering qualifications, including the AEC, you are able to network yourself as a Deckhand/Engineer, which increases your chances of finding employment faster.

We encourage our students to complete this course as soon as they arrive overseas, as this is an excellent boost for multi-tasking Deckhand CVs.

We have had an almost 100% employment success rate with our Deckhand students who added this course to their deck qualifications.

PADI OPEN WATER 1 + PADI RESCUE DIVER - APPROX R 3 500 (NOT OFFERED AT SYSA)

We have joined up with the top scuba diving school in Cape Town to have additional modules added to the existing Open Water Qualification. Students are taught how to set up dive gear, complete checks, refill cylinders with the use of Bauer Dive compressors, set up a dive tender for guests on board and assist the Dive Leader on the super yachts overseas.

Completing Scuba diver qualifications provides another opportunity to diversify yourself and show you have investigated the industry and have invested in yachting specific qualifications, as roughly 95% Super Yachts have dive gear on board and it falls on the Deckhands to prepare, maintain and refill tanks.

It is important that all deck crew look to progress to Dive Master by utilizing the scuba dives completed overseas to qualify for completing their Dive Master Qualification when home on holiday.

MCA/CITY AND GUILDS FOOD HEALTH SAFETY LEVEL II...

*****Please make sure that you do not already hold this specific City and Guilds qualification (Module 7150) before you book/pay with us, because we cannot do refunds if you realise at the start of the course that you have already done this course!*****

QUALIFICATION OVERVIEW

This two day course is aimed at those planning on working as interior crew on Super Yachts where they will be required to prepare and serve food.  Under the British Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), all Ship’s Cooks, catering staff, and others processing food in the galley are required to be suitably qualified in Food Hygiene or Food Safety in Catering.  This qualification, with City and Guilds as the examining body, meets the prescribed requirements.

The Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering (QCF) is a qualification aimed at chefs, steward/esses and all food handlers. The qualification is intended for learner s already working on yachts and those who are preparing to work in the industry.  City and Guilds Level 2 Food Safety is listed in MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) MIN 513.  This is not a Maritime course per se, but a course for food handlers, which of course includes yacht Steward/esses and Chefs and anyone else on board that handles food).

The aim of this qualification is to provide individuals with knowledge of the basic food safety practices, the hazards and risks to food safety presented by food operations and personnel, together with cost-effective, practical control measures.  Learners gaining this qualification will know that food safety is the responsibility of everyone involved in the storage, preparation, cooking service and handling of food.

Its topics are regarded by the Food Standards Agency as being important to maintaining good practice in the production of safe food. This approved qualification has been developed specifically for the Sector Skills Council for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism.  It is therefore fully compliant with industry and regulatory standards, as well as being recognised by environmental health practitioners, auditors and other enforcement officers. It is accredited and recognised internationally.

The Food Safety Level 2 is very important.  Food poisoning is not a short temporary illness.  It can kill or leave people with permanent disabilities.  You may have heard of the E.coli (Escherichia coli) 0157 outbreaks; this bacterium produces a very dangerous toxin, a poison that causes severe damage to the kidneys and ulceration of the large intestine.  Elderly people, young children, those in hospital and pregnant women are all more susceptible to food poisoning, because their immune systems (their defence mechanism against bacteria) are not working very well.

The first thing to understand is that food poisoning bacteria is invisible; you cannot detect them by sight or smell. The bacteria that you may detect because food is smelly and slimy are food spoilage bacteria, which are in the process of breaking down and spoiling the food. Dangerous bacteria, called pathogens, because they cause illness, are undetectable and in many cases only a very few bacteria are required to cause an infection and make people seriously ill.

Bacteria can appear anywhere, and for many reasons. Bacteria are a hazard, which is why special attention must be eaten without going through a safety process, such as cooking (which can kill bacteria).  People expect and deserve safe food, not illness.  A food item cannot tell you what has happened to it, how it has been cleaned, cooked or stored.  It is therefore important to keep records about the age of food, how it has been stored and at what temperature, for how long, and so on - for yourself and others.

Poor working practices, such as not washing hands, can result in dangerous bacteria - contaminating food and causing illness.  Keeping records is part of a food safety system called the Hazard Analysis Critical Control (HACCP). It is important to do things properly and nothing is more vital in the food industry than ensuring people don’t get sick from the food they eat. HACCP is used to ensure that bacteria have no chance of reaching our customers or ourselves, as well as avoiding food contamination.

TYPE OF PROGRAMME
This is an accredited short course.  On successful completion you will receive a certificate from City and Guilds of London (also on MCA – Maritime and Coastguard Agency approved list of Food Health Safety courses).   PLEASE NOTE:  This is NOT a yachting specific course, but a Hospitality course.  Please do not expect to receive yachting training during this course, it is a Catering course for Hospitality personnel, but it is approved by the MCA for use by interior super yacht crew on board.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM THE SUPER YACHT INDUSTRY REGARDING THE FOOD HEALTH SAFETY

CAN I DO AN ONLINE FOOD HEALTH SAFETY COURSE?
We absolutely DO NOT recommend an online Food Health Safety.
The MCA does not approve online courses anymore as acceptable for MCA/MLC yachts.
See this notice from the MCA:   https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/min-513-m-maritime-labour-convention-2006-food-and-catering

ALSO SEE THIS NOTICE FROM THE PYA REGARDING THE FHS COURSES:
This is how this PYA website clarifies it:    http://www.guest-program.com/chefs

Food Safety Training is an MLC 2006 requirement and applies to all crew working on board MLC compliant vessels who are involved with food handling.  Regardless of number of crew or size of vessel, any person who touches food, whether for guests or crew, needs to hold a recognised and valid certificate. Food handling includes food preparation, cooking, plating food, preparing snacks & sandwiches, unwrapping food, taking food in and out of the fridges, storing food, serving food and clearing plates. This means effectively every crew member onboard.  The Food Safety in Catering Level 2 certificate is the MCA recommended qualification for all crew. The Food Safety Level 2 is part of the GUEST program for entry level crew and the Level 3 Food Safety Supervision course is recommended for Heads of Department at Management level who also supervise crew working in the Service department.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The MCA did recognise online food safety courses for a while, however these are no longer considered acceptable as a standalone course.

Take a look at MIN 513 for the list of recognised courses.

We also recommend the following courses as part of your complete training for a smooth transition:

  • STCW Basic Training + STCW PDSD: This is mandatory for ANY crew member on board, regardless of position. Price R 7 900.00. Accommodation not included. New courses start each Thursday of every month. Please contact us at regarding course availability and contact details. Course duration: 11 days.
  • ENG 1 Medical Certificate: Please contact us for more information regarding this mandatory Medical Certificate. Price R 2000 (subject to change)
  • MCA Internationally accredited Food Health and Safety Level II Certificate: This is already mandatory on all UK/MCA flagged vessels, and very soon ALL yacht Chefs will need to hold MCA approved Food Health and Safety qualifications. This is now offered at SYSA - please contact us on for more information. Price: R 2915.

There are three major considerations for any crew member before you get started:

  1. Are you in a position to pay for an air ticket to fly overseas?
  2. Have you got sufficient funds to invest in terms of training, visas and accommodation overseas while looking for a job?
  3. Do you have the right attitude to work hard and the personality to live in confined and stressful conditions?

QUESTION: I HAVE HEARD FROM FRIENDS IN THE INDUSTRY REGARDING THE SHIP COOK’S CERTIFICATE. DO I NEED THIS TO ENTER THE INDUSTRY?

Ship Cook’s Certification - for Chefs working on UK flagged COMMERCIAL/CHARTER yachts with 10 or more crew and operating more than 60 miles off the coast are now required to have a "Ships Cook’s Certificate".

Currently only Chefs working on a UK flagged COMMERCIAL/Charter vessel fulfilling the criteria above are required to have the certificate. However, we all know that in the end all other yachts and flag states will follow suit, so we would suggest all chefs working on yachts to eventually gain this certification for future jobs and moving up the career ladder. There are several requirements to be able to complete the Ship Cook’s Certificate, one being a month of sea-time recorded in your Seaman’s book, therefore most to all Chefs enter the industry without this qualification (unless they worked in a Maritime environment where it was required prior to joining the super yacht industry). This course/assessment is not offered in South Africa at this stage. Currently only UK flagged vessels are affected by this, but it would be advisable for all chefs and future head chefs to gain themselves a Ships Cooks Certificate after entering the industry.

If you have any questions about the Ship Cooks Certificate - please contact us on for more information.

RYA Power Boat Level II ...

This course is essential for all crew (Deck Hands, Steward/esses and Chefs) interested in making their CVs attractive and themselves as marketable as possible to find employment on a yacht.

Super Yacht guests are regularly ferried between the yachts and the shore, and Interior crew often have to take the tender (rubber duck) to shore for provisioning (shopping). It is essential to hold a license for this rigid inflatable boat (RIB) before you can drive the yacht’s tender.

This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed drive a powerboat (tender). It covers all aspects of RIB driving, close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery, collision regulations, launching, fuelling, etc. and on passing, the students hold an RYA Power Boat Level II Certificate.

RYA Personal Watercraft Course (Jetski Course) ...

You may know a Personal Watercraft as a “jet ski”. They are versatile, fun and exhilarating. They are about speed, thrills and excitement, but need to handled with care.

js1

Our Personal Watercraft Course is designed for first time and experienced riders alike. Increasingly this certificate is required for launching and use in most International harbours and waters, so yachts are required to have qualified and licensed crew on board who can operate the jet skis anywhere in the world. Many yachts expect all their crew to have licenses for PWs before they can operate and handle them. Therefore, we advise that all crew (exterior and interior) qualify themselves before applying for a job – as this can mean the difference between being hired or not.

The one day PW Course focuses on safe operation and handling skills for everyone driving a jet ski. This is yet another excellent qualification Certificate to add to your CV to make yourself stand out above any other candidates when you are applying for a job on board a yacht.

****The price of this course includes all UK Postage and RYA Registration fees for your PWC license****

js2

The course focuses on the following:

Introduction:

  • layout of a PW, controls, propulsion and steering system, fuel and oil, stowage compartment
  • personal equipment – wetsuit/dry suit, personal buoyancy, head and eye protection
  • pre-launch checks
  • essential safety information, kill-cord, safe speed, local hazards
Collision Avoidance:
  • rules of the road applicable to PWs
