Placement

As a part of our service to crew, we assist in the placement of our Top Candidates. For successful placements, it is important for the yachts to note that we charge the vessel a small placement fee.

Industry norm:  Entry level crew struggle to be hired from South Africa. The reason for this is simple. Each year, at the beginning of each season, in both Europe and USA, Captains have the opportunity to meet and interview new crew face to face. This is often followed up by a probation period on board. Also, when a position opens up, the Captain wants a replacement immediately, in other words within a day or so… this once again, is not possible from South Africa, as crew need to get visas, organize flights, etc. These points aside, SYSA assists crew in being hired as much as possible.

Crew Placement Process

  1. After each practical training course, the Instructor will provide us with a Course Assessment of each student. This evaluates and assesses each crew member’s participation, personality, interaction with the course students, manners, as well as overall course performance. This vital information provides us with a more in-depth reference on each student, which can also be provided to Captains as part of each crew member’s portfolio. Industry Standards prevent us from promoting average crew.
  2. We supply a professional head and shoulders color photograph of our crew and the opportunity to do a live Skype interview with interested Captains and owners.
  3. We check all references from former employers, this information is captured and can be made available for Captains and Owners perusal.
OTHER MARITIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES...
Our company is focused on providing our crew with as many career options as possible. Super Yachting is not suitable for everyone. The thought of spending a large amount of capital, investing in a new career, only to discover that this is not the way forward, would certainly be a disappointment. We also offer advice on other options available within the Maritime Industry.

TEAM PLACEMENTS ON BOARD LUXURY CATAMARANS

These smaller, more intimate working conditions act as a great foundation for working within the Maritime Industry. It provides valuable experience and an opportunity for networking. You will be working on a 50 - 60 foot Catamaran, in charge of 8 – 10 guests. Couples interested in this option, should be young (in their twenties and thirties), energetic, presentable, dedicated to their job, flexible, self-starters and be able to sustain hard work and long hours. Because of the limited crew accommodation, we find that it works better if the crew members are in a relationship (married, engaged or have been dating for a period of time), as they share a cabin and ablution facilities.

Environment on board Catamarans:

On board the charters, all meals and refreshments (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are provided and the crew interacts with the guests in all aspects (diving, snorkeling, historical tours, etc.). Because of the close interaction between crew and guests, crew must enjoy socializing, conversation, entertaining, and have the ability to have fun and pass this onto guests.

Requirements:

* Captain - RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, with STCW 95, Radio License (RYA or equivalent)
* Scuba Dive Master or Instructor qualification is preferable, but not essential
* Chef/Hostess – STCW 95, Stewardess Introductory Certificate and some culinary experience or SYSA Chef Course

Please note:
A commitment of 1 year is required.

OTHER OPTIONS

Super Yachting South Africa and Chilli Adventures are working together to assist you in starting off and progressing in a career in the Maritime Industry. Whether you are looking to work on a large Super Yacht, as a Captain on board a Catamaran, or on a Cruise Ship sailing around the globe, we are here to assist you in taking your first steps in the right direction.

Like most careers these days, it is expensive to invest in the correct qualifications and training. If you look at Super Yachting for instance: the salary, travelling and lifestyle appeal to many young men and women, but the qualifications needed could cost up to R 30 000 or higher. The perks of the job and salary that you’ll earn however, will more than make up for this! Added to this, completing some maritime training courses, can of course give you a significant boost if you are looking at applying for other programs like Chilli Adventures Summer Camp USA, ahead of starting your Super Yachting career.

Taking part in other travel programs, like those mentioned below, is an excellent way to save money ahead of undertaking the Maritime courses that you’re interested in, as well as a great networking opportunity and a way to gain valuable work experience. People often choose to take a couple of basic Maritime courses, then work at a Summer Camp in the USA (utilising the skills that they have learnt - perhaps as a watersports instructor), and then return to South Africa to complete other necessary Training. The related skills gained at Summer Camp will look great on a Yachting CV, and the work experience gained will be very beneficial throughout a yachting career.

So, if you don’t have the financial resources or necessary skills available to immediately complete all the compulsory training courses required for entry-level crew in the Maritime Industry, you may want to consider one of the following:

· Summer Camp USA

Summer Camp USA is ideal for anyone who is looking for adventure, enjoys kids and the outdoors, and who wants to gain new skills, while working alongside people from across the globe. Work at one of 800 summer camps in the USA, and assist in teaching activities to children aged 7 – 15 years old. This could include landsports, watersports, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, theatre, drama and lots more! For more information, please contact www.chilliadventures.com

· Winter Work Travel USA

As a full time student, you have the incredible opportunity to work and travel to the USA over your summer Vacation (Dec – Feb), and do just about anything – anywhere in the USA! Since it’s actually winter season in the US, most South Africans head to the major ski resorts and take up positions as ski lift operators, retail sales staff, waiters, etc. Positions often include a free ski pass - just think, unlimited skiing / snowboarding! For those not fond of the cold, don’t worry, placements are possible in warm areas like Florida, Caribbean Islands and even Hawaii! Remember, you MUST be a full time student to qualify. For more information, please contact www.chilliadventures.com

· Career Training USA

Gain experience and industry knowledge within your field of study for between 3-18 months, by taking up an internship position in the USA. Career Training USA is ideal for anyone who wants to advance their career and earn money while doing it! You can work in finance, architecture, hospitality, marketing and more. Find your own position or have Chilli Adventures secure one for you. For more information, please ccontact www.chilliadventures.com

· Au Pair USA

If you enjoy working with children, have prior experience, and are looking for some excitement – why not consider becoming an Au Pair in the USA? This programme is one of the greatest ways to discover USA, and you’ll have the opportunity to experience American culture first-hand by living with an American family and caring for their children. Not only will you be receiving a weekly wage for your childcare services, but also an educational allowance to allow you to study. You will have opportunities to meet new friends and explore the surroundings of your new American home. For more information, please contact contact www.chilliadventures.com

· Work UK

Despite the demise of the UK Working Holiday Maker Visa, there are still opportunities for South Africans wanting to work in the UK. Assistance with Highly Skilled Migrant Visas and Ancestral visas, as well as some Employer sponsored work visas is available, depending on job placement. Many job placements are possible across the UK, particularly in hospitality. All types of employment is available, from Chefs to call centre work, to working on the London Underground! For more information, please contact contact www.chilliadventures.com

· Chilli Volunteers

Feel compelled to give back and help others in a meaningful way? Many options exist to do this whilst travelling to exotic locations and becoming a fundamental part of that culture. Volunteer options are available in child care / teaching, health care, construction, environment / conservation and more. Learn a new language, experience a new culture and make a real difference.
