Super Yachting South Africa (SYSA) is proud to unveil a groundbreaking new opportunity for aspiring maritime professionals: a Submarine Pilot Trainee Program in partnership with U-Boat Worx, global leaders in luxury submersible technology and the largest builder of private submarines. The wide range of U-Boat Worx models includes manned personal submarines that can accommodate from one to 11 people and operate to depths of 100 meters up to 3,000 meters.
This collaboration marks a major milestone for SYSA and it all started with two of our standout crew.
Earlier this year, SYSA sent two crew to the expedition boats as zodiac operators. Their professionalism, work ethic, and technical skill left such a strong impression that we were put forward to assist U-Boat Worx with crew selection for the submarine pilot opportunity.
Train as certified submarine pilots with U-Boat Worx
We’re now looking for four ambitious crew members to train as certified submarine pilots, kicking off in August 2025. U-Boat Worx have developed the world’s leading submersible pilot training program, recognised internationally for the benefits it brings to both its customers and the industry. They offer sophisticated and effective learning platforms that incorporate both theory and practical aspects to provide trainee sub operators with certificates of competence. Each training module comprises theory tutorials combined with training dives that will be held at their own training center, “Sub Center Curaçao”.
Sub Center Curaçao is the first submersible training center in the world for year-round training opportunities to its submersible owners. The industry defining training programs are also available to anyone who aspires to roam the subsea in a state-of-the-art private submarine. The land-based facility is located at the edge of a pristine deepwater reef that boasts amazing marine life, a diverse range of corals and sponges and crystal-clear visibility.
Applications
What’s included:
- 3-month intensive training at U-Boat Worx HQ in the Netherlands
- 1-month dive training in Curaçao
- Full certification as a Submarine Pilot
- €200/day during training and €300/day post-certification
- All accommodation covered during the program
- Free weekends to rest and explore
- Backed by a formal training agreement
Requirements:
- 24+ years old
- Fit, healthy, and ready to travel
- Marine, boating, or technical background preferred
- High-performance mindset
- Must have or be willing to obtain: STCW, VHF, RYA PB2, and Seafarer’s Medical (SYSA and U-Boat Worx will support this certification process)
